Privacy Policy — SpeakToon

1. Who We Are

SpeakToon is developed by Remi Yang. This policy applies to the Android app SpeakToon (package: com.remiyang.speaktoon).

2. Data We Collect

2.1 Device identifier (required)

• On first launch, the app sends an anonymous device identifier (Android ANDROID_ID) to our server hosted on Railway.
• Purpose: prevent abuse of the 14-day free trial (one trial per device) and restore trial status if you reinstall the app.
• Storage: stored in our database (speaktoon_users) on Railway, encrypted in transit (HTTPS).
• Retention: automatically deleted at the end of each quarter (January 1, April 1, July 1, October 1) for devices without an active subscription.
• No email, name, or account is required.

2.2 Purchase / subscription data (optional)

• If you subscribe to SpeakToon Premium, Google Play Billing processes the payment and provides subscription status to the app.
• We do not receive your credit card or bank details. Google handles payment data under Google's Privacy Policy.

2.3 Text from screen / OCR (optional, user-initiated)

• When you tap the translate button, the app captures the selected screen area and extracts text (OCR) to translate speech bubbles.
• On-device (default / offline): OCR via Google ML Kit; translation via on-device ML Kit or local AI model (GGUF). Text is not sent to our servers.
• Online (optional): if you have an internet connection, text may be sent to:
  • Mistral AI — only if you enter and enable your own Mistral API key;
  • Google Translate — as a free fallback when Mistral is unavailable.
• Screen images are processed in memory and are not stored or uploaded as photos by SpeakToon.
• A small local translation cache (Tatoeba phrases) may be stored on your device to speed up repeated translations.

2.4 Data stored only on your device

• App settings (target language, interface language, toggles).
• Your Mistral API key, if you choose to enter one (stored locally in app preferences).
• Downloaded local AI model file (~1 GB), if you choose to download it.
• Premium / trial status (local cache).

2.5 What we do NOT collect

• No advertising or tracking SDKs.
• No analytics or crash reporting sent to our servers.
• No email address, phone number, or user account (unless you contact us voluntarily).
• No precise or approximate location.

3. Permissions

• SYSTEM_ALERT_WINDOW — display the floating translate button and translation overlay.
• FOREGROUND_SERVICE / MEDIA_PROJECTION — capture screen area for OCR (with your explicit consent each session).
• INTERNET — optional online translation, model download, trial registration, and Google Play Billing.
• POST_NOTIFICATIONS — optional service notification while the overlay is active.

4. Third-Party Services

• Google ML Kit — on-device OCR and offline translation.
• Google Play Billing — subscription management.
• Google Translate (unofficial endpoint) — optional online translation fallback.
• Mistral AI — optional online translation when you provide your API key.
• Hugging Face — optional download of the local AI model file.
• Railway — hosting of our trial-registration backend.

Each third party has its own privacy policy. We encourage you to review them if you use online features.

5. Data Sharing & Security

• We do not sell or rent your data.
• Data transmitted to our server or third-party APIs uses HTTPS encryption.
• We share data only as described above and only to provide app functionality.

6. Your Choices

• Use offline mode (local LLM / ML Kit) to avoid sending text to Mistral or Google Translate.
• Do not enter a Mistral API key to disable Mistral translation.
• Decline screen-capture permission — translation will not work, but no screen data is processed.
• Device identifiers on our server are purged quarterly as described in section 2.1.

7. Children's Privacy

SpeakToon is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this page from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top will reflect any changes. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
